How to Import Wooden Baby Toys from China

Importing 0–3 wooden toys is not harder than importing other consumer goods. It is less forgiving: more document links, an age grade that constrains design, and a missing test report that can stop a container already paid for.

This is the sequence we run with buyers, and the points where money and time are usually lost.

The ten steps

  1. Brief. Destination market, sales channel, age grade, target retail price, packaging and private label or not. The destination market decides the test package, so it comes first.
  2. Shortlist and quotation. Ask for FOB price, MOQ, carton dimensions, carton weight, lead time and the report status of each model. A quotation missing those six is a price, not an offer.
  3. Sampling. Request a pre-production sample of the exact model, colourway and finish. Photograph it and keep it as the reference sample.
  4. Sample review. Check dimensions, weight, finish, edge sanding, joint construction and paint adhesion. For 0–3 products, check every component for detachment risk.
  5. Testing. Confirm which reports exist and what must be commissioned. The buyer usually owns this because its market and certificate are at stake.
  6. Specification lock. Freeze the bill of materials, the finish, the label artwork and the packaging. Every change after this point is a re-test risk.
  7. Production. Confirm the batch numbering scheme before the line starts, since the tracking label depends on it.
  8. Pre-shipment inspection. Check against the reference sample, not against the drawing. Include small-parts, pull and torque checks on 0–3 items.
  9. Documents. Test reports, tracking label evidence, packing list, invoice, certificate data for the importer's CPC. Missing documents are cheaper to fix before the container leaves than after.
  10. Shipment and reconciliation. FOB, CIF or DDP depending on the agreement; confirm who files the certificate data for the US and who holds the EU importer record.

MOQ and how to read a quotation

Typical MOQ for wooden baby toys runs from 30 to 200 pieces per model, depending on the model, the finish and whether the packaging is stock or custom. Confirm the number per model rather than assuming a range.

When comparing quotations, normalise them:

  • Is the MOQ per model, per colour, or per order?
  • Is the packaging a stock or printed custom box, and at what MOQ does printing become viable?
  • Is the quoted price FOB, and which port?
  • Are carton dimensions and weight included, so you can estimate freight and storage?
  • Is the sampling cost refundable against the order?
  • What is the quoted lead time measured from — deposit, artwork approval, or sample approval?

A 20% cheaper quotation with an undefined packaging spec and no carton data is not cheaper once freight and rework are counted.

The sample stage is where the design gets fixed

Samples are for finding problems, not for confirming hope. A useful sample review covers:

  • Construction. Dowels, glue joints, screws and magnets. For 0–3, ask what can come loose.
  • Finish. Coverage, adhesion, smell, drying. Scratch a hidden area and look at what happens.
  • Edges and holes. Sanding quality, gaps between moving parts, any hole or slot a small finger can reach.
  • Rattle and bell components. For rattles, the assembly must remain sound after drop and abuse.
  • Weight and balance. An over-heavy teether is a design defect, not a preference.

Keep the approved sample. It is the reference for inspection and, if a dispute arises, the only physical evidence of what was agreed.

Who owns testing and certification

The practical split:

ItemBuyerSupplier

Commissioning and paying for testsUsuallyCan coordinate
Holding the reportYesSupplies a copy
Production data for the certificateReceivesProvides
Issuing the CPC (US)US importerCannot
Signing the DoC (EU)Manufacturer or EU importerCannot sign for the importer

If the supplier already has a report on the model, cost and time drop. If not, budget a per-model test and a lead time in business days. The fastest route is usually a model family with shared materials and finishes, so one report covers several colourways.

Pre-shipment inspection for 0–3 products

A general AQL inspection is necessary but not sufficient here. Add:

  1. Small-parts check on every component, using the small-parts cylinder.
  2. Pull and torque test on attached parts, on a sample basis.
  3. Drop test on the packaged and unpackaged product.
  4. Rattle integrity check where applicable, including after drop.
  5. Paint adhesion check, cross-hatch or tape test.
  6. Label check: all four tracking elements, correct placement, correct batch.
  7. Age grade and warning text against the approved artwork.

FOB or DDP

TermWhat it meansWhen it fits
FOBSupplier delivers to the named port; buyer controls freight and importBuyer has a forwarder and wants cost visibility
CIFSupplier pays freight and insurance to the destination portSimple quote, less control over routing
DDPSupplier delivers duty-paid to the buyer's doorSmall buyers without an import entity, but importer-of-record questions need answering

DDP is convenient and it hides the importer of record. For US children's products the CPC must be issued by the US importer, so the party on the customs entry matters. Clarify it before choosing DDP.

FAQ

Q: What is the MOQ for wooden baby toys from China?

Typically 30–200 pieces per model, depending on the item and packaging. Custom printed packaging usually pushes it higher.

Q: Can the Chinese supplier provide the CPC?

No. The CPC is issued by the US importer or US domestic manufacturer. The supplier provides the test report and manufacturing data.

Q: How long does a first order take?

Sampling, specification lock, testing and production each add time. Lead times are quoted in weeks and depend on whether reports exist and whether packaging is custom.

Q: Is it cheaper to use a trading company or a factory?

A trading company can coordinate multiple workshops, which matters for a mixed range. A single factory can be cheaper for a narrow, high-volume line. The bigger question is who holds the documents and answers a compliance question in writing.

For the US document chain, see CPSIA and the CPC. For the European layer, read EN 71 parts explained. Browse the wholesale range or request a quotation with your destination market and model list through the quote form.
